Doctor Strange 3 and Shang-Chi 2: Delayed But Still in the Works, Plus a New Marvel Series on the Horizon.

Marvel Studios has had a rough few years, with delays, leadership shifts, and industry-wide disruptions affecting its timeline. While fans have been eagerly waiting for sequels to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, it looks like both films are still years away from production.

Doctor Strange 3 and Shang-Chi 2: What’s the Hold-Up?

According to industry insider Daniel Richtman, both Doctor Strange 3 and Shang-Chi 2 are now set to begin filming in 2026—meaning we likely won’t see these movies in theaters until 2027 or later.

Doctor Strange 3 was expected to be a major player in the MCU’s Multiverse Saga, with rumors suggesting the return of Sam Raimi as director. However, with shifting priorities and possible rewrites, it’s unclear how much of the original plan will remain intact.

Meanwhile, Shang-Chi 2 has been in limbo since its 2021 predecessor was a surprise hit at the box office. Director Destin Daniel Cretton has been juggling multiple projects, including the upcoming Spider-Man 4, making it uncertain when he’ll return to the world of Shang-Chi. Star Simu Liu, however, has reassured fans that the sequel is still happening, and he’s excited to reunite with Cretton when the time comes.

A New Marvel Series: Strange Academy Gets the Green Light

While the delays may be disappointing, there’s good news for fans of the mystical side of the Marvel Universe. Marvel Studios has reportedly officially approved a Strange Academy series, which will focus on Wong (Benedict Wong) training young sorcerers at Kamar-Taj.

The series is expected to bring new magical characters into the MCU and could serve as a bridge between Doctor Strange’s next adventure and the evolving Marvel timeline.

What’s Next for the MCU?

Though Doctor Strange himself hasn’t appeared on screen since 2022, Benedict Cumberbatch has confirmed he’ll be back for Avengers: Doomsday, which begins filming this year. The actor recently shared his excitement, saying:

While Doctor Strange 3 and Shang-Chi 2 may still be a long way off, the MCU isn’t slowing down. With projects like Deadpool & Wolverine, Spider-Man 4, and now Strange Academy in the mix, there’s still plenty for Marvel fans to look forward to.
